The Rip was billed as "inspired by true events." The movie follows Miami narcotics officers who uncover about $20 million and grow suspicious of internal wrongdoing; Matt Damon’s character, Dane Dumars, purportedly acts to expose the real thieves. Writer-director Joe Carnahan has said the story emerged from a friend’s experience as a Miami-Dade tactical narcotics leader.
The complaint claims the film borrowed details from the 2016 investigation that found nearly $22 million concealed in a home and disputes the role attributed to former officer Christopher Casiano, saying he was not involved in that incident. Damon’s and Affleck’s reps didn’t immediately respond; Netflix was not named in the suit, and a consultant allegedly apologized to the plaintiffs and offered to "make it right."
