Jamie Lynn Sigler is opening up about her eldest son's terrifying medical journey and how it changed their lives. In a preview for her appearance on Amanda Hirsch's Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, the 44-year-old mom reveals the shock of a rare diagnosis and the family's long recovery. Read on to discover the full story!

Diagnosis and the scary week

Sigler says her 14-year-old son Beau fell ill after a virus at camp. What began as high fever and loss of appetite worsened over about a week, until doctors identified acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), an inflammatory condition affecting the brain and spinal cord that Sigler described as encephalitis.

A body's mistaken attack

She explains the immune system reacted to the virus by producing antibodies that attacked his own nervous system. The family only secured hospital admission after Beau lost the ability to urinate — a pivotal moment that allowed doctors to understand and treat what was happening.
